One of the greatest tools in learning something new is a good sense of humor.
When I teach beginners to crochet, I get a little glimpse into their character. There are those that get stuck, laugh it off, ask for help, and try again. And there are those that let their frustrations build, getting progressively more lost, until they lose their focus and their resolve; then they blame (their hook, their yarn, their extra cup of coffee – or lack of coffee, sometimes their patient and well-meaning instructor, lol!)
When we encounter challenges, laughter and blame both serve the same purpose: to discharge uncomfortable emotions. Laughter allows us to lighten our load by gently casting our negative feelings into the ether, like dandelion seeds floating on air. Blame launches our negative feelings at a target (often a fellow human.)
The fact is, it can be pretty tough to learn new skills. But it’s often so rewarding. We know it’s good for our minds, bodies, and hearts to challenge ourselves in fun and meaningful ways throughout our lives.
If you’re looking for a new skill to learn, crochet is a fabulous art that merges beauty and utility. Yarn is a world full of textures, colors, and so much potential! What will your skein become as you literally simply use a hook to tie yarn into pretty knots?
If your knots aren’t as pretty as you expect they should be, will you get frustrated? … Probably. And when you do, I suggest you laugh it off and keep on trying! New skills take practice, practice, practice, so let your frustrations melt into self-forgiveness and simply enjoy the journey!
